Visitors who want the best of both worlds - proximity to the bright lights and action of Myrtle Beach, yet with a quiet and laid-back atmosphere - will enjoy Surfside Beach. Known as the "Family Beach," this two-mile stretch of shoreline offers the intimate atmosphere and natural beauty of a smaller resort area, combines with a the wide array of dining and attractions one would find at a nationally acclaimed vacation destination.
Summertime in Surfside Beach means sun, fun, and as much or as little activity as one chooses to enjoy.
The treasure of Surfside Beach is its coastline. While other area beaches are shadowed by high rise condominiums, Surfside is lined with family owned houses, resulting in an attractive and serene environment. Playing in the waves or digging sand castles may fill most of a typical beach day, but beach bums also enjoy riding jet skis and banana boats, or even taking in the scene from a higher perspective by parasailing. Surfside Beach is popular with local and visiting surfers, and at the annual Guy Daniels Memorial Surf Off in August, spectators are treated to an extra dose of extreme stunts and action
The Surfside Beach Fishing Pier offers another option for enjoying the deep blue. Throw in a line or toss out a crab net to see what the tide might bring in or take a walk to enjoy the weather and overheard conversations of old salts. The pier sponsors fishing tournaments in the spring and fall for more serious anglers; the top fish reeled in from this location in 2008 included a 13-pound mackerel and a 9-pound bluefish.
Surfside Beach offers a recreation area fit for all kinds of families - including those who have children with special needs. All Children's Park, nationally recognized for its innovative and practical design, is a unique playground featuring traditional equipment modified to meet the needs of both able-bodied and disabled children.
Perpetuating its reputation as the Family Beach, Surfside offers numerous services, facilities and annual events designed for families large and small. On the beach, lifeguards are located a frequent intervals, and beach chair and umbrella rentals are available. The town offers five conveniently located and well maintained parks featuring playgrounds, picnic tables, tennis courts, and walking trails around natural tidal lakes. For a festive treat, check out Surfside's annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration, the Sun Fun Kids Fair in June, the Fall Family Festival in October, or the community Christmas parade.
